About us

Afrori is a multi-award winning bookshop based in the heart of Brighton, East Sussex. The idea for the shop was born out of passion and frustration. In the last 50 years there has been very little change in the publishing industry despite the changes that have happened in society particularly regarding racism and diversity. The bookshop has a simple mission plan. Support black authors. Create diverse bookshelves. Be a voice for justice. The shop has seen over 50 authors attend events in its first year alone. Including Joseph Coelho, Dorothy Koomson, Salena Godden, Caleb Azumah Nelson, Kit De Waal, Yvonne Bailey Smith, Yomi Sode, Nikki May, Guvna B, Ciannon Smart, and Patrice Lawrence. They run book clubs, author events, supper clubs, Anti-Racist Kids Clubs, weekly craft mornings, community projects, do school visits and pop up shops across the country, as well as working with other festivals and charities to ensure books get out to all places. Afrori Books are co-founders of Brighton Book Festival.
